Hovenden studied in Paris and eventually moved to America, where his home served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The attainable excellence that Giclee printmaking affords makes the reproduction virtually indistinguishable from the original piece. He painted realistic, quiet family scenes and narrative subjects, often depicting African Americans. This method of stretching and preparing a canvas allows for a frameless presentation of the finished painting. Artist: Thomas Hovenden Subject: People Style: Traditional Product Type: Gallery-Wrapped Canvas Art This ready to hang, gallery-wrapped art piece features a couple standing in the center of the frame. Giclee (jee-clay) is an advanced printmaking process for creating high quality fine art reproductions. Gallery wrap is a method of stretching an artist's canvas so that the canvas wraps around the sides and is secured a hidden, wooden frame. The result is wide acceptance of Giclee by galleries, museums, and private collectors. Thomas Hovenden was Irish artist and teacher. Thomas was a member of the Society of American Artists, an associate member of the National Academy of Design, and replaced Thomas Eakins as Professor of Painting and Drawing at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
